Eastern Cape

Eastern Cape Programmes

In the Eastern Cape, we are spearheading a transformative approach to improving foundational literacy by integrating behavioral science into teaching practices. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by educators in this province, particularly in rural areas, our strategy focuses on enhancing teacher pedagogy through targeted interventions. We are developing and assessing the impact of incorporating behavioral science principles into the standard Funda Wande package. This approach aims to reduce variation in how teachers use our Learning and Teaching Support Materials (LTSM) and maximize their instructional time, leading to more consistent and effective teaching practices.

Capacitating Heads of Departments (HODs)

  • To ensure the sustainability of these improvements, we are providing HODs with coaching skills that enable them to support and mentor teachers within their schools. This initiative is crucial for embedding the changes in teaching practices and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

Supporting the ECDoE Reading Strategy

  • As technical advisors, we are closely involved in the implementation of the Eastern Cape Department of Education’s Reading Strategy. This collaboration allows us to share our learnings and best practices from other provinces, particularly the Western Cape, and to tailor our support to the specific needs of the Eastern Cape.

Improved Teacher Effectiveness

  • Teachers in the Eastern Cape will become more adept at using Funda Wande’s materials, resulting in a higher quality of instruction. The focus on behavioral science will help teachers maximize instructional time, leading to more engaged learners and better literacy outcomes.

Sustained Pedagogical Improvements

  • With HODs equipped to coach and mentor their peers, the improvements in teaching practices will be sustained over time. This will create a ripple effect, where more schools across the province adopt and maintain high standards of literacy instruction.

Enhanced Literacy Outcomes

  • The integration of these new approaches and the technical support provided to the Eastern Cape Department of Education (ECDoE) will contribute to a significant increase in the number of learners meeting grade-level proficiency in literacy. This will be especially impactful in isiXhosa-speaking schools, where Funda Wande’s materials and support are concentrated.
  • By continuing to be a strategic partner in the implementation of the ECDoE’s Reading Strategy in the Eastern Cape, Funda Wande will help ensure that the strategy is implemented effectively, leading to widespread improvements in literacy rates across the province.

Western Cape

Western Cape Programmes

In the Western Cape, Funda Wande is focused on scaling our interventions through a sustainable, low-touch model in partnership with the Western Cape Department of Education (WCED). Our strategy empowers the WCED to implement and expand our literacy and numeracy programs, ensuring on-time LTSM distribution, teacher training, and program monitoring. This approach allows for widespread replication across the province with minimal ongoing support from Funda Wande.

Limpopo

Limpopo Programmes

Limpopo offers Funda Wande a unique opportunity to enhance foundational numeracy alongside our literacy interventions. Our focus is on improving early-grade mathematics education, addressing the critical need for stronger numeracy skills in addition to our established literacy efforts.
