Limpopo

Limpopo Programmes

Limpopo presents a unique opportunity for Funda Wande to make a significant impact on foundational numeracy, in addition to our ongoing literacy interventions. The strategic focus on improving mathematics outcomes through the MARKO-D levels and cascading teacher training. The programmatic questions in Limpopo are 1. Maths at Scale: What would it take to scale the Mathematics intervention across the province? 2. Anchor Partnerships: Can partnerships with other NGOs support in accelerating the scale of the Funda Wande programme?

Marko-D SA Developmental Model

  • We are introducing the Marko-D SA developmental model as a key component of our numeracy intervention. This model is designed to improve learners’ progressive understanding of arithmetic concepts, helping them achieve grade-level proficiency in mathematics. The focus is on identifying and supporting learners who need help moving to higher number concepts, ensuring that no child is left behind.

Comprehensive Training and Support

  • We provide regular, in-depth training for teachers and Teacher Internss, with a particular emphasis on numeracy. Our Numeracy Academy Courses  are designed to equip them with the skills needed to effectively support learners in mastering arithmetic concepts. Additionally, we conduct quarterly assessments of learners using the Marko-D tool to track progress and adjust our interventions as needed.

Enhanced Numeracy Proficiency

  • The use of the Marko-D SA developmental model will enable learners in Limpopo to develop a stronger grasp of arithmetic concepts, leading to higher levels of numeracy proficiency. This is critical in a province where foundational numeracy has traditionally been a challenge.

Empowered Educators

  • Teachers and Teacher Interns in Limpopo will receive targeted training and support, enabling them to more effectively teach both literacy and numeracy. This will lead to more confident and capable educators, who are better equipped to meet the needs of their students.

Regular Assessments and Adjustments

  • Through quarterly assessments using the Marko-D tool, Funda Wande will be able to track learners’ progress and make data-driven adjustments to the intervention, ensuring that it remains effective and responsive to the needs of the learners.

Western Cape

Western Cape Programmes

In the Western Cape, Funda Wande is focused on scaling our interventions through a sustainable, low-touch model in partnership with the Western Cape Department of Education (WCED). Our strategy empowers the WCED to implement and expand our literacy and numeracy programs, ensuring on-time LTSM distribution, teacher training, and program monitoring. This approach allows for widespread replication across the province with minimal ongoing support from Funda Wande.

Eastern Cape

Eastern Cape Programmes

In the Eastern Cape, we are integrating behavioral science into teaching practices to improve foundational literacy. By targeting teacher pedagogy, especially in rural areas, we aim to reduce variation in the use of our Learning and Teaching Support Materials (LTSM) and enhance instructional time, leading to more consistent and effective teaching.
