Western Cape

Western Cape Programme

In the Western Cape, Funda Wande is focused on scaling our successful interventions through a sustainable, low-touch model that leverages our existing partnerships with the Western Cape Department of Education (WCED). Our strategy in the Western Cape involves capacitating the province’s education system to take ownership of the implementation and scaling of Funda Wande’s literacy and numeracy programs. This includes supporting the WCED in the on-time printing and distribution of LTSM, teacher training, and monitoring the rollout of our programmess. This approach is designed to ensure that our programs can be replicated across the province, reaching a large number of schools and educators with minimal ongoing intervention from Funda Wande.

Teacher Professional Development

  • We support the WCED in training teachers in both Afrikaans and isiXhosa schools. Our resources and training programs support educators deliver high-quality literacy and numeracy instruction.

Professional Learning Communities (PLCs)

  • To foster continuous improvement, we have supported the establishment structured PLCs, allowing teachers to collaborate, share best practices, and refine their instructional methods. We do this by our IsiXhosa and Afrikaans Literacy Specialists training  Lead Teachers to lead PLC sessions in their cohort districts.

Sustainable Scale-Up

  • The low-touch model will enable the WCED to independently sustain and expand Funda Wande’s programs, ensuring that the benefits of these interventions reach a larger number of schools and learners over time. This model allows for scalability without sacrificing the quality or effectiveness of the programs.

Improved Literacy and Numeracy Rates

  • As these initiatives take root, the Western Cape is expected to see significant improvements in both literacy and numeracy rates, with more learners achieving grade-level proficiency. This will contribute to the overall goal of ensuring that all children in the province can read for meaning by age 10.

Limpopo Programmes

Limpopo offers Funda Wande a unique opportunity to enhance foundational numeracy alongside our literacy interventions. Our focus is on improving early-grade mathematics education, addressing the critical need for stronger numeracy skills in addition to our established literacy efforts.

Eastern Cape

Eastern Cape Programmes

In the Eastern Cape, we are integrating behavioral science into teaching practices to improve foundational literacy. By targeting teacher pedagogy, especially in rural areas, we aim to reduce variation in the use of our Learning and Teaching Support Materials (LTSM) and enhance instructional time, leading to more consistent and effective teaching.
